Pros
- Offers free delivery to CBD addresses
- Best for made-to-order cakes
Cons
- Doesn’t offer themed cakes
- Usually fully booked
Cakes By Anna is the go-to for made-to-order cakes and delivery in Christchurch. For classic flavours like banoffee, tiramisu, ginger cakes, and Swiss rolls, Cakes By Anna is your top choice.
Run by Christchurch native Anna, the cake shop specialises in naked wedding cakes made with natural ingredients and no artificial colouring or fondant.
Her cakes can be customised to be gluten-free, egg-free, vegan, nut-free, and dairy-free, often at no extra charge.
I once ordered a vegan-friendly cake from her shop for a friend, and I was happy to know that she delivers to CBD addresses for free. Reaching her, however, took a while because she’s often fully booked for weeks.
While she doesn’t make themed cakes (gender reveals, birthdays, letterings, etc.), her cakes are beautifully decorated with fresh flowers, fruits, and veggies.
The cake I ordered turned out beautifully made, and my friend enjoyed every slice!

Pros
- Offers express cake ranges
- Short turnaround time for orders
Cons
- Some dry cakes
- Some order mistakes like the wrong size
If there’s a cake shop in Christchurch that you can depend on for last-minute orders, it’s Just Desserts. Doubling as a cafe and cake studio, you can sample their signature creations before placing your order.
A few of their most popular flavours include chocolate raspberry, caramel banana, red velvet, vanilla, and triple chocolate mousse.
While they specialise in made-to-order cakes, they also have a select range of express cakes that customers can buy at the last minute. These ready-made cakes are smaller than the average made-to-order cakes, but they’re also way cheaper.
Just Desserts accepts custom cake orders with just a 24-hour lead time, much faster than other stores I’ve tried, which usually require 48 hours or more.
Although I appreciate their express cake service, I have some issues with their made-to-order cakes. Mine arrived drier than the cafe’s sample and in the wrong size.

Pros
- Affordable cakes
- Wide variety of themed and classic cakes
Cons
- Doesn’t offer custom-made cake services
- Limited selection of gluten-free or allergen-free cakes
I first heard about The Naked Baker from a girlfriend who ordered an R-18 cake for my Bachelorette party. I was taken aback by the cake design but laughed out loud because of its creativity.
If there’s one word to describe the cakes at The Naked Baker, it’s creative. They’ve got a wide range of themed cakes from slabs to round ones with lots of chocolate shavings, candy, lollies, and even doughnuts.
Base flavours include carrot, chocolate, vanilla, rainbow, Black Forest, and white chocolate.
Most cakes cost about $45 to $80, depending on the size and shape. Their smallest cakes can feed up to 6 people while their largest one can feed up to 80 or more.
They don’t take custom cake orders, so what’s on the menu is what you’ll get, with only the option for additional toppings or lettering. I wish they had more gluten-free or allergen-free choices; currently, they only offer about 4 options.

Pros
- Cakes are mostly available within 24 hours
- Been in business since 1960
Cons
- Not suitable for themed cake designs
- Limited cake options and flavours
My grandparents are both Christchurch natives and they’ve known about Sydenham Baker for many years. The bakery has been in business since 1960, and its cake recipes have remained the same quality over the years.
If you’re looking for cake deliveries in Christchurch that will remind you of home-baked goods, I highly recommend ordering cakes from Sydenham.
Their cake selection is very limited, but they’re usually ready for dispatch within 24 hours and are relatively affordable (around $42 per cake).
Cake flavours include Black Forest, carrot, chocolate, raspberry, white chocolate, and Kahlua (coffee liqueur).
Sadly, they don’t do themed cakes as the available designs are as is. They still make great desserts at small dinner parties or private celebrations, though!

Pros
- Offers same-day deliveries
- Wide variety of flavours, shapes, and sizes
- Best for weddings and parties
Cons
- Not all cakes are available for nationwide delivery
- Same-day delivery is only available for Christchurch addresses
The Cake Eating Company was my brother’s wife’s first choice as a wedding cake vendor, and I had the pleasure of working with them when I helped out in the planning process.
The cake shop specialises in wedding and party cakes, offering a variety of sizes, shapes, and flavours like banana, caramel, raspberry, vanilla, chocolate, and white chocolate.
Additionally, they provide brownie cakes—large trays of fudgy brownies that can be personalised with messages or lettering.
My sister-in-law ordered a custom two-tier wedding cake, plus cupcakes for the guests. She paid $50 for delivery, but the cake turned out better than she expected.
Aside from wedding cakes, they also have regular cakes for sale, ranging between $175 to $450 per order.
Not all of their cake range is eligible for same-day delivery, but it helps to know that the service is available when you need it!
