Transportation Costs for Waiheke Island 

The travel costs for Waiheke Island vary depending on where you’re coming from, but we recommend budgeting a minimum of 500 NZD. This will cover basic transportation costs to Waiheke Island and during your trip. 

If you’re coming from Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown or other cities, you’ll have to fly into Auckland first to get to Waiheke Island. Depending on which airline you choose and what day you fly out, the ticket prices may vary. 

Generally though, you could expect to spend the following on tickets: 

  • Wellington to Auckland — 50 to 150 NZD
  • Christchurch to Auckland — 60 to 200 NZD
  • Queenstown to Auckland — 100 to 250 NZD 

Note that if you’re coming from Auckland like we did, you won’t need to fly. 

Either way, whether from Auckland or Christchurch, taking the ferry or a private boat from Auckland is mandatory to get to Waiheke Island. To get around once you’re on the island, you’ll also need to consider the costs of a rental car. 

Ferry and Private Boat Costs

When taking the ferry from Auckland to Waiheke Island, you can choose between Fullers360 and Sealink. 

  • Fullers360 operates regular ferry services from downtown Auckland to Waiheke Island (Matiatia Wharf). A normal roundtrip one-way adult ticket starts at 46 NZD, while an off-peak return ticket starts at 24.75 NZD. 
  • SeaLink offers ferry service from Half Moon Bay or Wynyard Quarter in Auckland to Kennedy Point on Waiheke Island. Adult fares start at 23 NZD and vehicle transportation is also available, with prices starting at 120 NZD for a standard car.

Private boat charters can be arranged from Auckland to Waiheke Island, with prices varying depending on the boat size, duration, and inclusions. 

You can book a charter boat through Viaduct Harbour Marina. Expect to pay anywhere between 150 to 500 NZD per hour for a private charter. 

Keep in mind that you may be charged for fuel costs depending on the boat’s fuel consumption. In general, expect to pay around 2.50 NZD per liter of marine petrol.
