The first time I hiked in Queenstown, I quickly discovered that altitude was no friend of mine. Twenty minutes in, my lungs were waging a rebellion against the altitude, and my legs felt like they’d been replaced with lead poles. 

Drenched in sweat and regretting not bringing more than one granola bar, I was starting to rethink my life choices—maybe Netflix and chill were more my speed instead of hikes. But after a few more hiking trips, I found my groove and some of the most stunning views I’ve ever seen.

If you’re also thinking about hitting the trails, here are my top hikes in Queenstown that are definitely well worth the sweat and effort.

1. Queenstown Hill Time Walk

If you’re a history buff or a family looking for a fun day out, the Queenstown Hill Time Walk is perfect for you. This trail mixes history, nature, and stunning views all in one.

The walk starts off in a pine forest, so you’ll be surrounded by the fresh scent of pine as you go. Once you get past the treeline, get ready for some jaw-dropping views of the Remarkables, Cecil Peak, and the Kawarau River.

Along the way, you’ll find six plaques packed with cool facts about Queenstown’s past. At the top, you’ll find the “Basket of Dreams” sculpture, which is a great spot for photos and a bit of reflection.

2. Ben Lomond Track

9. Bob’s Cove Track

10. Moonlight Track

11. Jack’s Point Track
