The Best Aged Care Facilities in Auckland for Those Golden Years
Let’s face it, growing old is inevitable (unless you’ve discovered the fountain of youth, in which case, call me!). But growing old gracefully? That’s where Auckland’s top-notch aged care facilities come in.
We’re not talking about those dreary institutions of the past – oh no! Today’s aged care scene is all about resort-style amenities and activities so engaging you’ll forget all about those afternoon naps.
Who said retirement had to be boring? In fact, after reading this guide to Auckland’s top aged care facilities, you might just be tempted to fast-forward a few decades. But don’t worry, we won’t judge!
How much do aged care facilities in Auckland charge?
The average cost of aged care in Auckland is around $1,272 per week. However, this may still change depending on the room you’ll get and whether or not you’ll apply for financial assistance.
How we chose
1. Age Concern Auckland
Age Concern Auckland caught our attention due to the comprehensive range of services they offer to support our elderly community. From elder abuse and neglect prevention to community social work and health promotion, they’ve got it all covered.
One of the standout programs is their Community Social Work Service. This service is dedicated to helping older adults who are facing social issues, poverty, and health challenges. They aim to maximise independence and improve quality of life by collaborating with local organisations, volunteers, and agencies.
Another initiative we found particularly touching is the Homeshare program. This program facilitates shared living arrangements to combat loneliness and enhance well-being through mutual support and companionship.
They also stand out for their health promotion activities and the Accredited Visiting Service, which help to enhance social connections among older adults. It’s clear that they put a lot of effort into fostering a sense of community and ensuring that no one feels isolated.
We also have to give it to them for offering most of their services free of charge to people aged 65 and over living in Auckland.
Not only do they get government support, but also donations from private companies. However, they do receive a high volume of requests to acquire their services/assistance since they’re free for those aged 65+. As a result, there might be a waiting period for certain services.
Pros
- Comprehensive services
- Flexible living arrangements
- Free services
Cons
- A few reports of poor customer service
- A high volume of requests
Ensures a rewarding time spent with lovely folks
“As a volunteer visitor myself, I know the pleasure our clients get from either regular phone calls, or face-to-face chats, with these lovely folks, with perhaps, the occasional trip out for a cuppa !! If you have a little time to spare, then please do consider becoming a volunteer visitor with Age Concern. You will really enjoy the time spent with these folks.”

2. Edmund Hillary Retirement Village
Edmund Hillary Retirement Village is truly a gem for those looking to enjoy their golden years with ease and comfort.
What we love most is the range of living options available, from independent living to assisted living and full care. As their needs change, residents can switch to a different option without moving to a new place.
Their accommodations are top-notch. They have one to three-bedroom apartments and townhouses that boast modern, open-plan layouts, making them feel like home right from the start.
We were even impressed by their electronic care app, myRyman. It’s honestly a game-changer since it allows their staff to effortlessly record and access resident information, such as their medical history and medication schedules.
We have to give it to them for their financial certainty. The base weekly fee is fixed for the entire stay, and the deferred management fee is capped at 20%, which is quite reasonable compared to other places.
One thing we’re just a bit iffy about is the pet policy. While pets are allowed, this is subject to negotiation, which might be a limitation for residents who wish to keep their pets with them without any conditions.
Pros
- Comprehensive care options
- Innovative care technology
- Financial certainty
Cons
- Pets in residence by negotiation
Removes worries about home maintenance for ageing parents
“My parents moved here years ago.” Before he died my dad said it was like being on a perpetual vacation. The worries of home maintenance as they aged were negated, they felt safe and became part of a community with like minded neighbours. They remained active and independent in a separate apartment. My mum still lives a full and active life there.”

Demonstrates excellent management and staff efforts
“Our Ryman village Miriam Corban, Lincoln Rd. Henderson was recently invited to the Edmund Hillary village for a Christmas lunch. A delicious meal, served up in their large restaurant. Management and staff went out their way to ensure that we invitees enjoyed ourselves, and the meal provided. Thank you to all those involved, from those who were lucky to attend.”

3. Bupa Hugh Green Retirement Village and Care Home
Bupa Hugh Green Retirement Village and Care Home really impressed us with its range of living options. From modern one and two-bedroom apartments to a full spectrum of care options like dementia, respite, and palliative care, they’ve got everything covered.
When we visited, we were struck by the array of amenities designed to enhance the quality of life. Residents can enjoy delicious meals in the café, take a dip in the indoor swimming pool, or get lost in a good book in the library.
For those who love socialising, there are regular events like happy hours, community concerts, and quiz nights to create a lively and engaging atmosphere.
One aspect we particularly appreciate is how inclusive they are since they provide an LGBT-friendly environment to have a welcoming atmosphere for all residents.
We did notice that their price for apartment living is on the higher side, starting at $773,000 per year. While this already includes safety, peace of mind, and various service packages, it might still seem a bit too high for some.
We also have to mention that while residents can bring their own furniture, the ability to fully customise their living spaces is limited due to the need to maintain standard furnishings and layouts for all rooms.
Pros
- Range of living options
- Regular events and social programs
- Pet-friendly & LGBT-friendly
Cons
- High cost
- Limited flexibility for customisation
Creates a resort-like atmosphere that make residents feel at home
“Hugh Green care home was a very short chapter in my fathers life (8 months) but during Dad’s time in Shannon the staff were amazing. The team always showed empathy and dignity to my father and I know there was some very trying times but they never failed to reassure and make him feel safe. When we despaired they were reassured, when we were sad they made us smile. The team accepted and welcomed my mother on her daily visits, they never made her feel in the way – thank you. A huge fear for us as a family was Dad would forever want to leave – never did this happen – he always called Huge Green Care Home the resort – who would want to leave a resort. If you are in the situation we never thought we would be in please don’t look pass Huge Green Care Home. From the laundry lady, the garden man, caregivers, nurses & management team – it’s the friendly faces and banter that make it more bearable to leave your loved one behind in their care. We will be forever thankful to Huge Green Care Home.”

Fosters positive relationships among residents
“Our friend has been a resident for the past few months. It is of a very high standard and we cannot praise the staff highly enough. The other residents we have made friends with are also very pleased. Keep up the good work.”

4. Claire House Rest home
Claire House is known for its boutique-style aged care experience with a personal touch. We love how they focus on personalised, client-focused residential care. With just 58 beds, each room comes with ensuite facilities and premium décor that residents can tailor to their own tastes.
When we talked to some of the residents, it was clear they were enjoying the range of activities on offer. From bingo and bowling to crafts and dancing, there’s always something fun to do.
We also appreciated the added conveniences like hairdressing, podiatry, and allied health services, which make it easy for residents to access everything they need without leaving the facility.
Another thing that impressed us is that they have premium accommodation charges ranging from $10 to $18 per day. This pricing is quite manageable compared to others since it already includes a variety of services and amenities that enhance residents’ comfort and enjoyment.
One thing to note is that while they offer some specialised care services, those needing more intensive medical or hospital care might need to look elsewhere for more comprehensive support.
Pros
- Personalised and boutique environment
- Budget-friendly
Cons
- Limited capacity
- Limited to rest home-level care
Ensures the best care for mothers
“I am so grateful to the staff and management of Claire Home. It is a second home. Warm, loving and caring. Absolutely the best for my mum.”

5. Miriam Corban Retirement Village
Miriam Corban made it to our list for a reason. We were genuinely impressed by the range of top-notch amenities available. The residents here are spoiled for choice with a heated indoor swimming pool, spa, and even an all-weather bowling green.
When we talked to some of the residents, they couldn’t stop raving about the ACC-accredited Triple-A exercise program. It’s designed to improve strength, balance, and mobility for all ability levels and is clearly a big hit.
The seasonal menu is another highlight since it offers freshly prepared meals that cater to various dietary requirements.
It’s also worth noting that their financial planning is straightforward and stress-free. The base weekly fee is fixed for the entire time you occupy your unit, and the deferred management fee is capped at 20% of the occupancy advance.
Pros
- Exceptional amenities
- ACC-accredited Triple-A exercise program
- Resident-friendly financial terms
Cons
- Located on a busy road
Provides a safe, convenient, and brand-new living environment
“What a well situated retirement village this is. Right next to a supermarket, with another directly opposite. Three major banks diagonally opposite. A bus stop outside for those going to Henderson, another opposite, fir those returning from Henderson. Waitakere hospital about 1km away. And for those like ourselves who like socialising, cafes closeby. Ryman have chosen an amazing site here for we retirees. Safe, convenient, and brand new!!”
