From Retro to Rare: The 5 Best Antique Stores in Christchurch
Have you ever been caught in that gut-wrenching instant where time seems to screech to a halt?
In a twist of fate worthy of a sitcom, my cat decided to reenact a feline version of Godzilla with my mother’s priceless vase. Needless to say, my mother sent me out on a mission impossible to find a duplicate of the truly one-of-a-kind.
I searched through Christchurch’s antique stores for a replacement vase, and along the way, I came across all the best antique stores in the city! So, I got to thinking that maybe I should share my finds with others.
If you’re an antique collector (or need to replace an antique), here are the best Christchurch antique stores that made it onto my list.
How I Chose
1. Vintage Wonderland
Vintage Wonderland is brimming with old-time charm, with mighty oak tables that bring to mind grand Victorian feasts and polished mid-century chairs straight out of an old spy movie.
Whether you’re on the hunt for the perfect prop for a theatre scene or seeking a standout piece for a photo shoot, these guys have a remarkable selection to choose from.
Their collection of grand picture frames, aged signs, and occasional gramophones draws you in.
Everytime I go, the staff at Vintage Wonderland are generally helpful and willing to discuss the items. Occasionally, a knowledgeable team member provides interesting anecdotes or historical insights about the unique treasures in the shop.
But there’s one thing that gets under my skin—it’s the hit-or-miss availability of items.
One time I had my heart set on a specific mid-century lamp I saw in their online catalogue, but when I arrived, it was nowhere to be found. Turns out, their online inventory isn’t always up-to-date.
Pros
- Immersive old-time ambience
- Extensive collection suited for theatrical props
- Staff provides helpful guidance
Cons
- Online inventory isn’t always up-to-date

This place is an absolute treasure trove
“This place is an absolute treasure trove, and we aim to pop in at least once a month to see what new things they have unearthed. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, and the most amazing range of quality second hand and antique goods. Doesn’t feel stuffy like some second hand places, it’s light and airy, and floor plan is well thought out. Have made many purchases and been very happy with the quality of everything we have purchased from here”
Vintage Wonderland is beautifully laid out
“Vintage Wonderland is beautifully laid out with wonderful treasures from years gone by. Alistair and his staff are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about everything in their store and will go out of their way to be of assistance.”
2. Chaos Collections
From the creaky wooden floors to the fascinating trinkets, Chaos Collection’s ambience is warm and inviting. Every item promises its own brand of nostalgia, be it an old camera capable of developing stories or a set of rustic keys.
The prices here are kinder on the wallet too. The last time I came here, I picked up some cool old metal signs that would’ve cost me an arm elsewhere and a funky lamp that’s now the centrepiece of my living room—all without having to spend a fortune.
And the people at Chaos Collections were just the cherry on top. They guided me through the maze of antiques with genuine smiles and were eager to chatter about the history behind each piece I showed interest in.
However, I must admit that there was one aspect of my visit that left me a bit underwhelmed. The lighting inside the store was somewhat dim, making it difficult at times to appreciate the intricate details of the antiques on display.
While it added to the old-world ambience, I found myself squinting to closely examine some of the smaller trinkets.
Pros
- A warm and inviting atmosphere
- Wallet-friendly prices
- Exceptionally friendly staff
Cons
- Dim interior lighting

3. Youngs Jewellers
Venturing into Young Jewellers was like stepping back into an era of elegance. The store was a visual feast, with antique display cabinets showcasing shimmering pieces that ranged from dainty Victorian lockets to bold Art Deco rings.
Whether it was a modest gift or a grandiose statement piece, the selection was diverse and rich in quality. I was particularly drawn to a piece of Autore South Sea pearls; their lustre was hypnotic.
The personal touch added to the experience. The staff, knowledgeable and unhurried, seemed to take genuine pleasure in explaining the history of their treasures.
However, for all its charm, the store’s layout felt a bit cluttered. Sometimes, this made it challenging to appreciate each jewel’s beauty without feeling overwhelmed.
Pros
- Elegant ambience
- Unique selection
- Informed and attentive staff
Cons
- Cramped layout

Her antique jewellery is among the best in the country
“This is my all-time favourite jewellery store. Rebecca, the owner, is so knowledgeable about jewellery and makes every purchase feel special, regardless of size. She has pieces that start from $200 right through to upper tens of thousands and you always feel comfortable and at ease whatever your budget on the day.Her antique jewellery is among the best in the country.”
Stunning unique pieces that are both classic and modern
“This is the most beautiful jewellery boutique in Christchurch. Stunning unique pieces that are both classic and modern. Rebecca is an expert with an eye for design. Highly recommend for quality items and personalised exquisite service”
4. Impulse Imports Ltd
Impulse Imports has solid wooden bookcases that will remind you of old libraries, dressers that could belong in your grandparent’s farmhouse, and teak pieces so sturdy they look like they could last another hundred years.
The staff walk you through their place, stopping now and then to tell you about this coffee table or that console, how it was made, and where it came from. There’s no pressure to buy; they’re just proud of what they have to offer.
Their prices are fair, too. Without the middleman, you get deals that seem as old-fashioned as the antiques themselves. And they’ve got sales that’ll shock you—up to 75% off on stuff they need to clear out for the new arrivals.
One thing that did irk me a bit was the online ordering system. While I love that I can browse and buy their treasures from the comfort of my home, there have been times when my orders were delayed.
I get that shipping antiques can be tricky, but a heads-up or better tracking information would go a long way.
Pros
- Sturdy teak furniture and antique-inspired pieces
- Fair pricing
- Discounts of up to 75%
- Staff doesn’t pressure you to buy
Cons
- Online ordering issues
- Less-than-ideal delivery times

Wouldn’t hesitate to purchase from these guys again
“Purchased a cabinet online and the whole process went extremely smoothly. Great communication, they organised to ship it to our door (North Island) at a very reasonable price and when the cabinet arrived it looked fantastic. Wouldn’t hesitate to purchase from these guys again.”
We adore Impulse imports for the unique gems we find for our home
“We adore Impulse imports for the unique gems we find for our home. We have purchased 2 large side boards from them as well as baskets and rugs. The side boards are made beautifully out of gorgeous wood and are both statement pieces in our home. From helping in store to delivery, they are great to business to support.”
5. Ferry Antique Centre
Ferry Antique Centre is the kind of place where you find yourself suddenly in possession of a quirky Kiwiana piece that starts conversations or a bit of kitsch that adds just the right touch of vintage charm to your living space.
They’ve got everything from Christchurch-crafted textiles that you won’t find anywhere else to a collection of traditional gold bangles and pearl necklaces that hark back to a time when every piece told a story.
And if mid-century dazzlers are your thing, you’re in for a treat. They have pieces that absolutely embody the term ‘statement jewellery’.
While I cherish the blend of authentic and unusual items at Ferry Antique Centre, it’s only fair to note that the prices can occasionally feel steep.
For the discerning buyer, this may raise an eyebrow or two, suggesting a moment of pause to consider whether the item is truly a must-have or perhaps a tad overvalued.
Pros
- Quirky Kiwiana pieces
- Mid-century statement pieces
Cons
- Steep prices
