5 Best Shops to Get Cake in Wellington That Locals Swear By
Cakes are essential in my family’s wild celebrations. Whether it’s a birthday or a gender reveal, there’s always cake served for dessert.
Safe to say, almost everyone in my family has a sweet tooth, but they leave the cake ordering and sourcing to me.
And if you’re looking for the best cakes in Wellington, I’m happy to share my top recommendations!
How much do cakes in Wellington cost?
In Wellington, regular cakes that feed up to 12 people cost between $45 and $90. Larger cakes can range between $100 and $250 and are usually good for sharing up to 30 people.
Factors that contribute to varying prices include the number of tiers, design complexity, flavours, and delivery fees.

Pros
- Specialises in vegan cakes
- Completely nut-free, egg-free, and dairy-free
Cons
- Limited selection of ready-to-eat cakes
- Minimum of two day’s notice for orders
Sweet Release is Wellington’s first cafe and bakery serving all-vegan cakes and pastries. I love that they are also a completely nut-free, dairy-free, and egg-free bakery, so worrying about contamination wouldn’t be a problem (although, still take some caution).
I ordered the best-selling Triple Chocolate Cake with two tiers as a birthday cake for my brother last week. My brother is extremely allergic to nuts, so I needed to ensure that Sweet Release could pay extra attention to the making of the cake by ordering via phone call.
The staff were polite and accommodating. They required a two-day notice for cake delivery, which was fine for me but might be an issue for last-minute orders.
I paid $60 in total. Although the cake flavour options were limited, my brother loved his nut-free, dairy-free cake, which tasted just like a decadent chocolate cake.
2. Arobake

Pros
- Affordable cakes
- Affordable delivery fees
Cons
- No allergen-free or vegan-friendly cake options
- Limited delivery service coverage
Arobake’s carrot cake was my favourite cake growing up, and I remember having it almost every birthday when I was a child. Arobake has been one of my family’s go-to bakeries for cakes in Wellington, and I highly recommend you try ordering from them.
Other than carrot cake, they also sell lemon sour cake, pear and ginger cake, vanilla bean cake, orange almond cake, and double chocolate cake.
They only deliver cakes in Wellington and surrounding towns, but the fees are very low at $9.50. The carrot cake costs $31.90 for an 8-inch cake, which I think is pretty affordable considering they use only natural ingredients to make it.
I’ve tried their other moist and tasty cakes. They’ve been around since 1989, but I wish they offered more varieties, sizes, and allergen-free options.

Pros
- Beautifully designed cakes
- Wide variety of cake flavours and sizes
Cons
- Doesn’t offer custom-made cake services
- Pricey
Tomboy’s cakes in Wellington are some of the most beautifully arranged I’ve seen. I initially thought the floral toppers were icing, but they’re real blooms adorned with freeze-dried fruits and berries.
The flowers may not be edible, but the cakes look stunning. They offer their cakes in six flavours (dark chocolate, vanilla, lemon, chocolate chip, raspberry, and banana), and give you the option to choose your icing.
They don’t do custom cakes, but the fact that you can choose the flavours, icing, toppers, and decor pretty much makes up for it (although you can’t design them yourself).
The cakes also come in many shapes and sizes, from mini cakes that feed two to extra large heart-shaped cakes that can feed up to 30 people!
Tomboy isn’t the cheapest (medium cakes start at $85), but I recommend them for small celebrations!

Pros
- Best for birthday and themed cakes
- Wide variety of cake flavours, including tropical ones like durian
Cons
- Slow customer service
- Pricey
Cube Bakery and Cafe in Wellington offers unique cake flavours like durian, taro, chestnut, and green tea. They also sell Chinese moon cakes and Japanese-style treats, making it my go-to for unique flavours.
The bakery is perfect for themed cakes for birthdays, gender reveals, and anniversaries. They offer customisable decorations with messages, toppings, icing, and fruits.
For those in a hurry, they have ready-made cakes with toppers like “Happy Birthday” or “Congratulations!” including gender reveal ones with pink or blue insides and icing.
I wasn’t surprised to find most of their standard cakes ranging between $65 and $150 because of the intricacy of the designs and the uniqueness of the flavours. They do get sold out quickly, especially when they’re in season!
My only other complaint is slow response times, likely due to high demand, so I recommend ordering well in advance.

Pros
- Best for bespoke cake orders
- Specialises in wedding cakes
Cons
- Delivers to Wellington only
- Doesn’t offer fondant
My sister’s wedding cake was from Em & Skye Cake Co., and it was a crowd-pleaser. The cake shop specialises in wedding cakes, but they also make bespoke creations for special occasions like birthdays, graduations, baby showers, and more!
Working with Em & Skye was a treat. The staff were polite, friendly, and open to our ideas on flavours, design, and budget.
They didn’t offer fondant as my sister wanted but used Swiss meringue buttercream instead. The cake turned out even better than we imagined!
Aside from classics like vanilla, lemon, chocolate, and banana, they also offer salted caramel, raspberry, and passionfruit flavours for the base. They can also do gluten-free versions if you ask them in advance.
Fortunately, my sister chose to marry in Wellington, as the shop only delivers within the city. It would have been much more expensive to have the cake delivered elsewhere.
