The 5 Best Dog Groomers in Dunedin for Stress-Free Styling
My friend had this massive, lovable German Shepherd growing up. But bath time was always less ‘spa day’ and more ‘wrestling a wet bear.’
She’d use a garden hose that flailed around like a rogue python, the studs clinging to everything but her dog, and she was always soaked and exhausted.
Those messy battles… they’re what got me thinking…how many dog owners out there face similar grooming struggles?
Driven by my friend’s sad grooming experiences, I recruited the rest of the Top Reviews writing team, and we got busy finding the absolute best dog groomers that Dunedin has to offer.
Here’s who can turn even the most challenging, dirty, canine into a picture-perfect pooch.
How much does it cost to go to the dog groomers in Dunedin?
1. The Grooming Room

We first heard of The Grooming Room from local pet parents in Dunedin, and it’s easy to see why so many rave about it. They have a way of making dogs smell really good after the session.
We saw one scruffy terrier arrive, looking like it had seen better days. After the grooming, he left with a sleek, shiny black coat that was completely free of any matted knots.
We appreciate the care and patience the groomers have. They don’t rough-handle your dog—even if it’s a little feisty. They also call the dogs by name to create a familiar environment and help them feel safe before the actual grooming.
The team takes care of everything, from fleas and ticks to trimming around hotspots for dogs with dermatitis. Owners we talked to praised the team for going above and beyond to make sure their dogs get the premium grooming look they deserve.
We also really love the groomers’ attention to detail. Many pet owners raved about how the groomers made sure their dogs’ eyes were clear of crusty eye boogers.
One small downside we noticed, though, is that the groomers don’t always seem familiar with unique or specific haircuts. Many told us they had to show a picture to avoid having their dog end up with a “summer cut”—that style when your dog looks practically bald.
Make sure your pet has the best grooming experience
“What can I say absolutely lovely place Liz and her staff are fantastic and will bend over backwards to help you out and make sure your pet has the best grooming experience possible. It’s a wee bit expensive then another grooming places but you pay for what you get and with Liz you always get first class service. The new an improved premisis looks absolutely amazing after the new paint job and redecorating I have no trouble at all leaving Jasper with the team knowing he’s in the best care possible”

My dog always well groomed

2. Powderpuff Dog Grooming

Powderpuff Dog Grooming got on our radar because of their stress-free environment. Their veterinary-trained groomers know just what to do to put any anxious dog at ease. They’re gentle and even have chew toys around for a distraction if needed.
When it comes to styling, we understand why owners are often left in awe when they pick up their Fido. They are experts in working with special breed cuts, such as the schnauzer cut.
We saw firsthand how they maintained the iconic short hair on the body and head, with longer hair on the legs, beard, and signature brushy eyebrows.
We also love their standard full grooms. They offer extensive shampoo and conditioning treatments, tear stain removal, and even little hoodies for sensitive dogs during the drying process.
Owners also appreciate the finishing cologne that leaves their dogs smelling nice for days.
While their grooming techniques are nothing short of luxurious, we do have to say that their pricing is on the higher side.
Came out looking fabulous
“We were traveling through Dunedin and needed a tidy up for our yorkie – face, nails, wash etc. Dom worked on his day off for us and did an excellent job. Fletcher came out looking fabulous. From what I saw, Dom is obviously very caring towards the dogs in his care. Recommend.”

Our dog came back looking and smelling shiny and fresh

3. What The Pup NZ

We love how committed What The Pup is to dog grooming done right.
From what we observed, their groomers’ talent is undeniable. We love how they can easily handle breed-specific clips. Their meticulous scissor work was also impressive when we saw the result on some dogs.
We also appreciate their focus on a positive experience, especially for nervous pups and their owners. They send picture updates to owners, which is a thoughtful touch for those leaving their fur babies for the first time. It’s a small gesture that makes a big difference in easing anxiety.
Grooming-wise, we like that they do full grooms with products containing effective de-shedding treatments. Although we’re not sure about the exact brand, the customers we talked to raved about the lack of home shedding.
We also hear plenty of praise for their quick nail trims and thorough ear checks. They really do help make the dogs look even more pampered and fresh.
The only downside we’ve noticed is that their grooming calendar tends to fill up quickly. This can make it hard to snatch last-minute appointments for some pet owners.
So kind and patient with him
“I took my 6 month old spoodle in for his first groom. Nicole was so kind and patient with him, he came out with his tail wagging at full speed and smelling of blueberry pie.”

Always comes home settled and smelling gorgeous

4. Pampered Paws Pet Services Ltd

We love that Charlotte, the main groomer here, is also a trained veterinary nurse. Pet parents can rest assured that they’re in capable hands if anything happens to their fur babies.
We’ve heard from several people who brought their pets in with horrible hotspots and raw paws. Charlotte was able to offer expert advice and care, helping the owners understand their dogs’ skin issues more.
What stands out most, though, was Charlotte’s calming and welcoming demeanor. She’s very patient with dogs, and we like that she gives pets a little treat as a reward for good behavior. It’s a simple, thoughtful way that helps build trust.
As for the grooming itself, it’s nothing short of pampering. Pet owners rave about their dogs, returning with soft coats and trims that make theim look really fresh.
Now, it’s worth noting that Charlotte can be spread out pretty thin at times. She may not be able to accommodate a lot of dogs all the time.
Charlotte did an amazing job
“Charlotte did an amazing job on our timid very hairy bearded collie. She came out happy and smelling absolutely amazing. Charlotte is really lovely and would highly recommend her services.”

5. Animates Dunedin

Animates is the place for all things pets—from food and toys to top-notch grooming services.
We love that they offer pretty much any grooming service you could ask for. From quick hygiene mini grooms to advanced grooms, they handle everything from a style body trim to undercoat removal.
One of our favorite features is their dog facial treatments, which include a foam cleanser that leaves dogs looking and feeling refreshed. They even offer breath-freshening treatments using safe, non-toxic doggy toothpaste.
We also like that they let you take home a free toothbrush and a toothpaste sample. Plus, they take the time to teach you how to brush your dog’s teeth.
For new puppy parents, Animates offers a special intro groom for puppies, which we think is fantastic for any worries about how to care for your pup’s coat.
The one thing you should know, though, is that they aren’t always upfront with prices. They aren’t able to give a clear answer unless they physically see your dog in person.
Brilliantly knowledgeable and super helpful service
“Everything you need for your furbabies as well as a bunch of stuff you didn’t know you needed. Brilliantly knowledgeable and super helpful service from all staff. And a fab dog wash station that’s always clean, with towels provided. Our most favourite pet store ever, Stan loves his shopping trips!”
