How We Chose the Best Gastroenterologists in Auckland
1. MacMurray Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Centre
MacMurray Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Centre is the largest facility of its kind in New Zealand. They’ve got a huge team with over 45 specialists, including not just gastroenterologists but also colorectal surgeons, dietitians, and more.
These experts work closely together to tackle even the trickiest digestive issues. With their roles in senior public hospitals, they’ve got plenty of experience to back them up.
When we checked out their services, we were impressed with the range they offer. They cover standard treatments to advanced options like endoscopic weight loss treatments.
During our undercover consultation, it was clear that they take a full-service approach. They got you from diagnosis through to follow-up care.
Former patients praised the cutting-edge technology, including the Stretta procedure. It is a minimally invasive GERD treatment using radiofrequency energy to strengthen the muscle preventing acid reflux and reducing symptoms.
That said, a couple of former patients did mention that waiting times can be a bit of an issue. The appointment scheduling process could be a little confusing at times.
The staff and service at the MacMurray Centre was impeccable
“From the initial consultation to the sandwich and cuppa provided in recovery after my procedure, the staff and service at the MacMurray Centre was impeccable. The care and attention from the staff to make you feel at ease was greatly appreciated. Thank you to everyone, you are all doing a great job.”

Everyone was so caring and kind
“Everyone who I dealt with when I was at the MacMurray Centre yesterday were so caring and kind. The service was impeccable. A BIG thanks to all concerned, but especially Dr. Kumudith Ekanayaka who was so reassuring, calm and explained what he was doing throughout my procedure, and to Tatum Aquino and Karmen Hetaraka who ably assisted him. All of them so professional. MacMurray Centre should very be proud of themselves and their team for executing every action that has to be done, precisely and perfectly. Thanks Liz.”

2. Auckland Gastroenterology Associates
When we found out that Auckland Gastroenterology Associates had been around since 1994, we just had to check them out. They’ve got a ton of services covered—everything from general check-ups to more specialized treatments.
We had a chat with a few patients, and some were in for just routine gastro visits. But what really stood out was a patient who mentioned they were going in for surgery.
Apparently, the team works closely with a network of surgeons. Hence, if surgery is needed, they’ve got that covered too.
They’re also big on convenience. They offer urgent appointments and make the referral process super easy.
Plus, since they’re partnered with Southern Cross Health Insurance, a lot of services are covered under different health plans.
The team is also involved in teaching and research at public hospitals and the University of Auckland. This keeps them ahead of the curve with the latest in the field.
On the flip side, though, some patients did mention that the staff can come across as a bit rude or unwelcoming at times. It’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning a visit!

3. Marius van Rijnsoever
Dr. Marius van Rijnsoever has a really impressive background. He trained at some top spots like Fremantle Hospital and even did fellowship in advanced interventional endoscopy, which means he can handle some tricky procedures.
His background in cancer research also plays a big role in his work, especially when it comes to detecting bowel cancer early.
What stood out the most was how he make sure his patients understand everything about their health. Many of his former patients also said he digs into the root causes and creates personalized treatment plans.
We also love that he offers a range of minimally invasive procedures like gastroscopies. This procedure helps with diagnosing and treating digestive issues without the need for major surgery.
Plus, he works with a team of specialists to provide a comprehensive approach to more complex conditions.
The only downside? His pricing can be a bit on the higher side. But for the level of care and expertise make the price worth it.
He is interested in his patient, and invested in finding out what your issue is
“I can’t speak highly enough of Dr Marius. He is interested in his patient, and invested in finding out what your issue is. Within a day after calling me after hours he squeezed me onto his theatre list the next day – unheard of these days! He treated me with kindness, respect and most importantly he explained everything to me in plain english.”

4. Dr. Sam Seleq – Gastroenterology, Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy
Booking an appointment with Dr. Sam Seleq wasn’t the easiest at first, but once we got in, everything ran smoothly.
He’s well-known for his expertise in treating a range of issues like IBS, IBD, and peptic disorders. With his advanced training as an endoscopist, he also makes complex procedures like gastroscopies and colonoscopies look easy.
What’s also great is that he works with Southern Cross Health Insurance, so for those with coverage, accessing endoscopic procedures is a lot more affordable.
We also learned that Dr. Seleq is really committed to improving the field. He’s actively involved in research and education, which is helping to raise the bar for gastroenterology care in New Zealand.
One thing that stood out from chatting with his patients was how Dr. Seleq makes them feel at ease. He’s all about clear communication and really listens to his patients, making sure their treatment plans are personalized.
I was impressed with his attentiveness and thoughtful approach
“I recently had my first visit with Dr. Sam Seleq, and I was impressed with his attentiveness and thoughtful approach. He carefully considered various diagnostic methods to ensure an accurate diagnosis for my symptoms. While I haven’t started treatment yet and it’s too early to speak about results, I really appreciated how engaged he was. It was clear that he wasn’t just passively observing or rushing through the appointment but genuinely invested in understanding my condition and helping me. I plan to update this review later with my honest feedback after more time and treatment.”

5. Waitemata Endoscopy
One of the things that stood out to us about Waitemata Endoscopy was how quickly we got in for an appointment. Within just a week of being referred, we had a booking. This is awesome when you need a diagnosis or treatment fast.
When we visited for an undercover consultation, we were also impressed with how much they focus on minimally invasive options.
The team is made up of experienced gastroenterologists and surgeons who’ve worked in both private and public healthcare. They also offer a bunch of procedures, including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound.
For more complex cases, they also offer advanced treatments like Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) and Argon Plasma Coagulation (APC).
On a less positive note, though, one former patient shared with us that the medications she was given for the procedure led to an episode of cyclical vomiting syndrome, so that’s something to keep in mind.
However, this isn’t a common occurrence, as most of their patients mentioned feeling comfortable throughout the whole process. It might just come down to how your body reacts.
The nurses were caring and took care of me so well
“I went for a procedure today and suffer from anxiety so wasn’t having a great day until I actually got there and was greeted warmly and professionally. The nurses were caring and took care of me so well. Met the doctor who was also very caring and allowed me time to explain my issues and concerns. The procedure itself couldn’t have been made more comfortable. The post-procedure care was excellent and the plunger of coffee and delicious chicken wrap were very welcome after all the prep and fasting. Top notch service at this clinic.”
