In this list, we’ve gathered schools that are nationally accredited, as well as options for skill-building certificates. Some options are great for the foundational, while others are more ideal for real-world practice.

1. Skills Premier

With campuses in Auckland and Lower Hutt and over 30 years of industry presence, Skills Premier has the reputation we’re looking for. That said, we find this nail school idea for students looking for in-depth training.

The school offers a Level 4 New Zealand Certification in Nail Technology. While it’s extensive at 34 weeks, it’s worth the time investment considering the range of learning: manicures, pedicures, acrylic, nail art, and even customer service.

We liked that the school takes a student-first approach in its teaching model. The students we interviewed all said that the instructions had a high attention to detail when it comes to nail design techniques.

Additionally, there’s a lot of flexibility for new students. The enrolment process includes campus tours. Plus, they can get support through student loans and the school’s FeesFree Initiative. Like most things, eligibility must be met to access these.

However, a few students expressed disappointment as there is limited exposure to professional pedicure training. The school may be better suited for those who need basic and foundational knowledge of nails.

2. Evolution School of Beauty, Massage & Nails

Evolution is an ideal school for those who want to explore various areas of beauty, including nails, massage, and makeup. It’s best known in the area for its supportive, family-like learning environment.

We liked that the school offers NZQA-approved qualifications. This curriculum ensures up-to-date, real-world-focused learning that pushes students to master practical techniques alongside foundational knowledge.

We’re satisfied with their class sizes too. Compared to large institutions, classes are small, which enables a more personalised approach to technique. The mentorship, according to students, also felt warm and supportive.

Unlike many other schools we’ve looked at, Evolution is one of (if not the only one) those with a strong focus on well-being. With pastoral care, inclusivity, and mental health support, we find it a great institution for learners of all backgrounds.

Just take note – the course offerings in nail technology aren’t standalone but rather a part of a broader beauty qualification. This may not be the most direct path to nail-only training, but a flexible one for those who want to improve on various skills.

3. Monaco Nail Academy

We find Monaco Nail Academy to be a solid choice for those who love a flexible format when learning. Unlike traditional institutions, Monaco offers both online and in-person training alongside hands-on practical assignments.

Students may find them valuable when it comes to developing foundational knowledge. This is because of their in-depth teaching of the basics: product chemistry, disinfection protocols, and overall client care safety.

The school’s training is also impressively up-to-date. Their course content is reviewed regularly, with tutors travelling internationally to keep up with emerging trends.

In line with this, the community for students is also noteworthy. Monaco hosts Facebook groups, accountability coaching, and student retreats to encourage peer connections. This helps graduates establish a good network to start their careers.

If there’s a drawback, it’s that in-person training isn’t as flexible or accessible compared to its online counterpart. Those who prefer face-to-face instruction may find it limiting, though busy students may find it most helpful.

4. Beautique Academy

Beautique Academy is a good option for students who want a more hands-on approach to learning. The school offers a range of courses, including their flagship Specialised Nail Technician Course.

We liked that this course covers a wide range of techniques, including gel polish, extensions, and nail art. They even offer relevant learning in sanitation, nail anatomy, and even managing client consultations.

Classes include live model training, which allows students to build skills through real-world practice. Even better is that materials and equipment are all included in the course fees – students only need to bring their personal notes.

We appreciate that they offer both short-term and intensive programs. According to the students, the courses are well-structured with a clear progression – they even enjoy access to one-year lecturer support after course completion.

It’s important to note, however, that the courses are currently not accredited by NZQA. Still, for technique-focused learning, their courses and outcomes are sufficient, especially for those looking into building a business.

5. The Nail Vault

What we liked best about The Nail Vault is that they have a tiered selection of courses. This makes it easy for students of varying skill levels to sign up for the program that’s right for them.

Entry-level learners can start with their Gel Polish Technology Foundation Course. However, we see their Full Nauk Technology Foundation Course as more fitting for comprehensive studies.

Every student receives a full kit for lessons and up to 7 NZ-recognized Designer Nails certificates. This is something we find valuable, as this allows graduates to work professionally with a credible education. 

We find that their approach to teaching is individualised and hands-on too. In fact, classes are capped at just 2 students to ensure the best-tailored instruction. Plus, this enables a better learning relationship with the mentor to gain better industry skills.

However, with such small classes and rising demand, it’s best to expect that spots fill up quickly. If you’re eyeing this school, we recommend staying updated via their website and socials so you can sign up once a new season opens.
