There are two main ways to apply for a social security replacement in New Zealand: by mail or online. Keep in mind that the processing time for a social security card is usually two weeks, but this time can vary.

- Go to ssa.gov and scroll down to the bottom section and click on ‘Forms’.
- Download the application form from ssa.gov. Look for the “Application for Social Security Card” (Form SS-5).
- Fill out the form. After downloading the form, fill it out carefully. Make sure all the information you provide is accurate and up-to-date. If you’re applying for a replacement card, leave blank the space asking for the SSN.
- Prepare the necessary documents. You’ll need to provide some supporting documents along with your completed application form.
These typically include proof of identity (like a passport or driver’s license) and proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful non-citizen status if you’re not a U.S. citizen.
- Mail the application and documents. Once you have completed the form and gathered your documents, put everything in an envelope and mail it to a local Social Security office.
- Wait for your card. After mailing your application and documents, all you need to do is wait. Your new card will be mailed directly to you.

- Go to ssa.gov. Click on the hyperlink ‘replace card’.
- Make a request to replace your card. You can do that by clicking on the blue button: Answer a few questions.
- Answer the questions in order to determine if you are eligible to apply for a replacement online.
- Once you answer all the questions and if you are eligible you will see this page. Click on ‘apply online.’
- In order to apply online, you’ll need to have an online social security account. If you already have one, log into the system or create an account.
- Fill out the application form. After creating your account, you can access the application form online. Fill out the form with accurate and up-to-date information.
- Prepare the necessary documents. You must prepare some documents to support your application. These typically include proof of identity (like a passport or driver’s license) and proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful non-citizen status if you’re not a U.S. citizen.
- Upload the documents. After preparing your documents, upload them to your application.
- Submit the application. Once you have completed the form and uploaded your documents, submit your application.
- Wait for your card. After submitting your application, all you need to do is wait. Your new card will be sent directly to you.
