We’ve all been there—that moment of panic when you realize that your social security card, one of the most important pieces of identification you own, is missing. 

But don’t worry, applying for a replacement isn’t as daunting as it seems. Based on our own experience, we’ve written a step-by-step guide for you on how to apply for a social security replacement in New Zealand.

There are two main ways to apply for a social security replacement in New Zealand: by mail or online. Keep in mind that the processing time for a social security card is usually two weeks, but this time can vary. 

How to apply for a social security replacement by mail

1. Go to ssa.gov and scroll down to the bottom section and click on ‘Forms’.

2. Download the application form from ssa.gov. Look for the “Application for Social Security Card” (Form SS-5).

3. Fill out the form. After downloading the form, fill it out carefully. Make sure all the information you provide is accurate and up-to-date. If you’re applying for a replacement card, leave blank the space asking for the SSN.

4. Prepare the necessary documents. You’ll need to provide some supporting documents along with your completed application form. 

These typically include proof of identity (like a passport or driver’s license) and proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful non-citizen status if you’re not a U.S. citizen. 

5. Mail the application and documents. Once you have completed the form and gathered your documents, put everything in an envelope and mail it to a local Social Security office.

6. Wait for your card. After mailing your application and documents, all you need to do is wait. Your new card will be mailed directly to you.

1. Go to ssa.gov. Click on the hyperlink ‘replace card’.

2. Make a request to replace your card. You can do that by clicking on the blue button: Answer a few questions.

3. Answer the questions in order to determine if you are eligible to apply for a replacement online.

4. Once you answer all the questions and if you are eligible you will see this page. Click on ‘apply online.’ 

5. In order to apply online, you’ll need to have an online social security account. If you already have one, log into the system or create an account.

6. Fill out the application form. After creating your account, you can access the application form online. Fill out the form with accurate and up-to-date information.

7. Prepare the necessary documents. You must prepare some documents to support your application. These typically include proof of identity (like a passport or driver’s license) and proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful non-citizen status if you’re not a U.S. citizen.

8. Upload the documents. After preparing your documents, upload them to your application.

9. Submit the application. Once you have completed the form and uploaded your documents, submit your application.

10. Wait for your card. After submitting your application, all you need to do is wait. Your new card will be sent directly to you.
