We listed down the best outdoor activities for young adults in Auckland with your friends or even alone. These activities come with different price points, so it’s for any budget! 

We hope you enjoy these activities as much as we do. 

1 Do a Skyjump or Skywalk from the Sky Tower.

Do you want to take a leap of faith, literally? It’s awesome that you can actually jump from the highest building in New Zealand – connected to a wire, of course! 

You’ll be experiencing 11 seconds of pure adrenaline rush. It’s safe yet so exhilarating that we can’t stop recommending it to everyone we know! 

Of course, we understand it might not be for everyone, especially those who shudder at the thought of heights. 

The jump features a 192-metre drop which is equivalent to 53 floors down. Reaching a speed of 85 kilometres per hour – so yes, it gets intense. 

If that’s not your jam, then you can opt for a skywalk around New Zealand’s highest building instead. 

The catch? No handrails, but you’ll be connected to a wire to keep you safe.

What’s great about it is that you’ll have a 360-degree panoramic view of the City of Sails. Plus the adrenaline-pumping experience of walking on Sky Tower is something we recommend adding to your bucket list. 

2 Go skydiving!

If 192 meters is not high enough for you, why not go all out and go skydiving? 

How high is it? Well, it’s about 10 times the height of the Sky Tower – so not for the faint of heart. 

They offer packages to jump from 9,000 feet to 20,000 feet, with different prices for each height.

You may also opt to get yourself recorded for a fee. I mean, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, might as well have a keepsake for it!

Lastly, you don’t have to worry about how to get there, they offer free transport to and from Auckland City. They also include all the equipment for the skydive so you just have to be ready with your comfortable clothes and sneakers.

3 Ride the zipline on Waiheke Island.

Next stop is Eco Zip Adventures which offers zipline packages you should check out. The spectacular native forest experience is a must-try! 

It is an unforgettable journey on Waiheke Island, which is just 35 minutes from Auckland. Their  fully commentated tour includes a complimentary pick-up and drop-off from Matiatia Ferry Terminal or Oneroa Village so you won’t need to worry about anything. 

Plus, you’ll also get a guided nature walk exploring the forest. For safety, make sure you have your power bank with you so your phone’s always charged. 

Of course, the highlight is their unique, dual-flying fox ziplines. 

You won’t need to worry about your safety because they have the cutting-edge zipline braking system – the ZipStop system – developed here in New Zealand. 

Side note for those over 18: Waiheke also has a lot of good wineries! 

4 Go canyoning in Piha Canyon.

Have you ever heard of canyoning? If you haven’t, it’s a type of mountaineering where you get to travel in canyons by rappelling, swimming, climbing, etc. 

You can enjoy this activity in Auckland! This is perfect for adventurous souls who enjoy physical activity. 

Piha Canyon is surrounded by scenic hills beside Piha Beach. Journey through the picturesque Kitekite Falls by abseiling and descending a narrow slot canyon.

Piha Canyon is a very accessible canyon. So after canyoning, you would also have time to visit Lion Rock and its velvet black sand surf beach. 

AWOLAdventures recommends the full-day adventure since you’ll get your money’s worth that way – it even includes lunch! 

They also advise against bringing unnecessary valuables such as cameras, jewelry, and passports. You just need to wear your bathing suit, sporty footwear, and socks.

5 Go bungee jumping and climb the Auckland Bridge.

There’s a bungy jumping platform on the Auckland Harbour Bridge that we encourage you to try! 

The bungy pod is directly connected to the bridge and is a great activity for those thrill-seekers that want an adrenaline-pumping experience. 

If you’re not feeling that, you can also try climbing the Auckland Harbour Bridge. They have a guided tour that gives you a 360-degree panoramic view of Auckland. 

It is also very safe since it was engineered with safety as the main priority. 

6 Fan of all things gory and creepy? Go to Spookers!

Spookers isn’t like any other classic haunted house, it’s live entertainment wherein you’ll physically go through live actors and themed sets. 

They have amazing visuals and sound effects that will scare and excite you. They really crafted an experience you won’t soon forget. 

What we love about Spookers is the acting. The live actors and prosthetics department all do a really great job of creating a spooky and creepy experience that’s so realistic. 

Furthermore, they also rotate the live actors so you get a fresh experience even if you go through it multiple times. They also update the themes in order to provide better experiences.

7 Ride a mountain bike through Woodhill Park.

If you’re looking for something active and a little less hardcore, you can try Woodhill Mountain Bike Park. You can ride a mountain bike and jump along the trail.

Personally, we do this when we’re sick of the stationary bike at the gym. It’s a great way to shake things up and exercise. 

Woodhill Mountain Bike Park is Auckland’s only managed single-track network. You don’t even need to be an experienced biker in order to ride through their tracks. 

We love that it’s inclusive. You don’t have to be an expert biker to enjoy this. 

They have “L plates” ready if you’re a beginner biker to let everyone know that you’re new to riding. You also don’t need to bring your own gear because they offer rentals. 

If you’re not into mountain biking, then their disc golf is for you! You can play on their disc golf course and the holes are very easy to locate since they have markers 

8 Be one with marine life.

If you love the water and marine life,  then Goat Island Dive is for you. They offer gear rentals, making it so convenient – you just have to bring yourself. 

They offer 2 different types of experiences: snorkeling and scuba diving. Don’t fret if you’re a beginner in diving, they have guided tours that will instruct and help you make the most of your experience.

What we love about Goat Island Dive are its strict hygiene standards. They know that one of the things that people think about is how clean the rental equipment is so they’ve set everything up to ensure a safe experience for all of us. 

They use the appropriate detergent after each use. The masks, snorkels, fins, and boots are cleaned using hospital-grade sanitizers and the wetsuits and BCDs are thoroughly rinsed and shampooed.

A quick reminder that Goat Island is a marine reserve, so we encourage everyone to respect their rules and regulations to the letter. They have a cut-off time at 5:00 PM for their rented equipment, so keep that in mind as well. 

We recommend going there early. We swear the experience is worth setting your alarm clocks for. 

9 Go sailing in the City of Sails.

Well, we don’t call our city the “City of Sails” for nothing.  Enjoy the picturesque Auckland landscape from the water through this relaxing sailing experience from Explore Group. 

Sail under the Auckland Harbour Bridge, and see volcanic peaks and the city’s skyline at the comfort of your sail. Explore Group’s 50-foot yachts and their knowledgeable crew would keep you safe while you take your coffee, tea, or hot chocolate together with your friends and family.

10. Go camping in Ambury Park.

If you’re looking for a chance to unplug from social media and gadgets, camping is a great way to detox.  Good thing Auckland has lots of great campsites, one of which is Ambury Park. 

Ambury Park has 10 hardstands available on a first-come-first-served basis. You can also camp with your motorhome or campervan if the weather permits.

There is a toilet block nearby and water supply. However if you’re going to drink tap water, they recommend boiling it for at least three minutes to make sure it’s safe to drink. 

You may stay overnight for up to seven nights in total. Sadly, pets are also not allowed on the campgrounds.

The campgrounds do not have trash bins, so you have to take your trash with you when you leave and you’re responsible for cleaning up after. Lastly, fires are strictly not allowed – so no roasting of marshmallows here.
