Tongariro Crossing Lodge is a great place to stay if you’re looking for a comfortable and convenient base. It’s best for outdoor enthusiasts who want to be just a stone’s throw away from the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing trail.
The place is basically classic Kiwi charm, with a mix of homely comfort and modern convenience. From free wifi and self-parking to comfortable bedding and a well-equipped kitchenette, staying here means having everything you need.
Besides plenty of amenities, the lodge has a picturesque garden terrace, where we spent many peaceful evenings enjoying the stunning mountain views.

A stay at Adventure Lodge and Motels is perfect for those looking for easy adventure activity access and a shuttle service to the start of the Tongariro Crossing.
The staff can even provide packed lunches for your treks. (Make sure you call the front desk in advance!)
There are a variety of rooms to choose from – cozy lodge rooms, self-contained motel units, or even a private chalet. All rooms have complimentary wifi, tea and coffee-making facilities, and comfortable bedding to ensure a good night’s sleep.
They also have guided walks, mountain biking, tours, skiing, or fishing charter tours. After a day of adventures, try unwinding at their sauna or enjoy a delicious meal at their on-site restaurant.
Skotel Alpine Resort

Skotel Alpine Resort provides an immersive experience of being in the Alps. This is the highest hotel in New Zealand, located in Whakapapa Village at the base of Mount Ruapehu.
They have various accommodation options, from backpacker dorms to private rooms, dining facilities, and a shuttle service to the crossing. All rooms are designed with a touch of alpine charm and equipped with modern amenities.
Thanks to Skotel Alpine Resort’s prime location, we find it ridiculously easy to access different hiking trails, skiing slopes, and fishing spots whenever we stay here. Don’t forget to try their selection of drinks at their on-site restaurant (which has some amazing views!).
Pipers Ski Lodge

Pipers Ski Lodge offers a relaxed and comfortable stay amidst some of the country’s most beautiful natural landscapes. This budget-friendly option includes dormitory-style rooms, private rooms, and a fully equipped communal kitchen.
They also run a shuttle service to the crossing and rent out hiking equipment. But if you call the night before your day of doing the Tongariro Crossing, the staff can help organize guided hikes, ski trips, and mountain biking.
For a way to wind down after your adventure-filled day, we recommend relaxing in the lodge’s spa pool or sauna!

Manowhenua Lodge is a home away from home and is a quiet retreat away from the tourist crowds. From private rooms to shared dormitories, all are clean, comfortable and have the necessary amenities (including free wifi).
They also have a fully equipped communal kitchen, which we used some days to prepare our meals. Moreover, there are BBQ facilities available for those who enjoy outdoor cooking.
After a day of exploration and adventure, though, you’ll find guests relaxing in the lodge’s cozy communal lounge, equipped with a log fire and a selection of games and books.
Discovery Lodge Tongariro

Discovery Lodge is an ideal place to stay for those who wish to explore the region’s rich biodiversity, engage in thrilling outdoor activities, or simply relax and soak in the serene beauty of the area.
The lodge is just a short walk from the start of the crossing, so you can be on your way early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
In addition to its proximity to hiking trails, Discovery Lodge offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The lodge is on a hilltop, so you can enjoy panoramic views of Mount Ruapehu, Mount Tongariro, and Mount Ngauruhoe.
The lodge itself, though, has a range of accommodation options, from campsites to chalets.

The Park Hotel Ruapehu is just a short drive from the trailhead, making it a convenient resting place for your Tongariro Crossing adventure. We found the rooms we stayed in spacious and comfortable, and they all had private balconies with views of the mountains.
The hotel also has a library and a game room. Or, if you’re looking for some relaxation, you can soak in one of the hot tubs or enjoy a drink at the bar.
So, no matter what your interests are, you may just find something to keep you busy at The Park Hotel Ruapehu like we did.
